Gabrielle Roth, a third-grade student from Mrs. Melanie Macpherson’s class at Weatherbee Elementary, placed third in the essay portion of the Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory and Essay Contest held at Fort Pierce Central High School as a part of the week of commemorative celebrations to honor the memory of King. First-grade students from Samuel Gaines Academy visited the Florida Power and Light Energy Encounter program about magnets. They did an experiment with different items to see which item would attract or repel the magnet. Some of the items used with the magnets were paper clips, pipe cleaners, pencils, wooden clips and a penny. Students then categorized the items in the proper area on a mat. This week, in Kasey Ascani’s second-grade class, students were conducting a science experiment regarding plants and how they soak up water. Through a hands-on experience, students learned how plants absorb water by watching two celery stalks absorb both blue and red colored water. They discovered that plants drink water from their roots and the water travels throughout the entire plant, even all the way up through its leaves. Second-grade students have really enjoyed the science unit on living things. Students studied plants, animals, life cycles and the human body. Students had a lot of fun learning about all of the organs and systems that make up the human body. During the study of the nervous system, students had the opportunity to create a model of the brain and label all the parts of the brain. While students were labeling the brain, they were able to identify which areas allow functions such as speaking, smelling, and tasting to happen.

21st Century at Chester A. Moore has a lot of exciting things going on! Hello Patriots! Feb. 2 is a busy day! It is report card day. The student council will also have a meeting in Mrs. Singley’s room. Mrs. Merritt’s and Mrs. Southall’s classes are going to Oxbow and the fifth-graders are going to Port St. Lucie High School to watch Fiddler on the Roof. Feb. 3 is also a busy day at Fairlawn. The PTO business meetings are at 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Mrs. Kelly’s and Mrs. Bender’s classes are traveling to Oxbow. Florida Power and Light’s Captian Conservation will be speaking to all K-2 students at 1 p.m. in the cafeteria and the third-graders will be performing at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. On Feb. 4, Mrs. Forbes’ and Mrs. Ingersoll’s classes will be going to Oxbow.

MARIPOSA ELEMENTARY

This year, the Social Studies Committee worked very hard to design a float for the Martin Luther King, Jr. parade. Mariposa came in second place in the elementary division. The float not only highlighted the foundations that Dr. King taught–like volunteering, service above self, helping those in need, and giving to others, but featured the Mariposa Monarch Butterfly, our Mariposa school pledge on a scroll, and a painting of a variety of important Black Americans. MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY

Morningside Elementary celebrates 30 years of educating children in St. Lucie County. Thank you to all who attended our celebration. Former employees of Morningside Elementary attended the celebration to reminisce about the memories they’ve shared over the years. The fourth-grade students enjoyed a visit from Airman Weaver, who is a firefighter in the US Air Force. He shared factual information about his job and fire safety with the students who then took this information and wrote an expository essay. Second-grade classes enjoyed an in-school field trip with Hobe Sound Nature Center.

PARKWAY ELEMENTARY

A big thanks to all staff, faculty, and families who attended our Family Math Night. It was a wonderful success! Students enjoyed fantastic math games and centers as well as math themed read-alouds. Thank you Miss Piscopo for organizing this event. Parkway will be hosting a community yard sale April 16. This event will be open to the public. If you would like to reserve a space for $10, please contact the school at 772-340-4800. There will be a meeting on Feb. 9 from 9-10 a.m. in the media center to discuss ways that families can assist students, followed by student led conferences. We will provide parents and families with materials and strategies for home use. Following the meeting we will be having an FCAT family picnic. Please come out and enjoy this fabulous opportunity.

Rivers Edge would like to thank Mrs. Furtah, Mrs. Forman, Mrs. Frebertshauser, Mr. Fitzgerald, Mrs. Gibbons, Mrs. Agin and Larry Turnipseed for designing and building our school float for the Martin Luther King parade. We appreciate all the students, parents and staff members for participating in the parade. The kindergarten classes are exploring the nature of weather as well as the season of winter with the unit Winter Wonderland. The students will observe and describe the weather, learn about the water cycle and the sun’s role in weather conditions such as rain, snow and wind. Students started on a new adventure with their Success For All Kinder-Roots shared stories. These stories allow children to read engaging and interesting stories as they learn new letter sounds. Each student takes a book home to read with their parent. Parents, check your calendars for the exciting events coming up in kindergarten.
