What’s Bill Hader going to do after Saturday Night Live? Is Amy Adams revealing a bit too much skin in her new flick? Will Star Trek Into Darkness beat down Iron Man 3 at the box office?

  • Paris Hilton was one of the real-life celebrities targeted by the now infamous “Bling Ring”, and when she saw Emma Waston‘s new film about the events, she burst into tears. “It’s so violating. It just made me really angry and upset, and when I see these kids, I want to, like, slap them.” [New York Magazine]
  • Bill Hader is leaving Saturday Night Live after tonight’s season finale and doubts he’ll do impressions or spearhead a Stefon movie in the future. One thing that is for sure is that he will be relocating from New York to California with his family. [US Magazine]
  • Amy Adams is revealing quite a bit in her new David O. Russell flick. The actress was seen walking around in an extremely (like, extremely) low-cut dress with a permed Bradley Cooper. [The Daily Mail]
  • Star Trek Into Darkness is expected to push Iron Man 3 out of the top box office spot this weekend. The Star Trek sequel is on track to gross around $100 million this weekend, while Iron Man 3 should only take in about $30 million. [MTV News]

Ancient Creature with Scissor-Like Claws Is Named After Johnny Depp

05/18/2013 at 08:15 AM EDT

Johnny Depp was already a pretty unique guy. And now he can further boast that he’s the only actor to have an obscure, extinct creature that lived half a billion years named after him.

A 505-million-year-old fossil discovered recently has been named Kooteninchela deppi because of its scissor-like claws, which reminded the scientist who discovered it of Depp’s character from the 1990 movie Edward Scissorhands.

“When I first saw the pair of isolated claws in the fossil records of this species, I could not help but think of Edward Scissorhands,” the scientist, David Legg, said on the website of London’s Imperial College (see an image of the creature there). “Even the genus name, Kootenichela, includes the reference to this film, as ‘chela’ is Latin for claws or scissors.”

Legg then comes clean.

“In truth, I am also a bit of a Depp fan,” he admits, “and so what better way to honor the man than to immortalize him as an ancient creature that once roamed the sea?”

Depp, known for playing a somewhat more recent creature who also roamed the sea, has not commented on the honor – if he would even consider it that.

Certainly, unlike its namesake, the Kooteninchela deppi is a weird-looking beast. A distant ancestor of lobsters and scorpions, it had an elongated trunk for a body, millipede-like legs, large eyes atop movable stalks – and of course, those claws, which it may have used to capture prey or probe the sea floor.

The Kooteninchela deppi‘s many descendants are well known, however, including spiders, centipedes, millipedes and crabs.

“Just imagine it,” Legg says. “The prawns covered in mayonnaise in your sandwich, the spider climbing up your wall, and even the fly that has been banging into your window and annoyingly flying into your face are all descendants of Kooteninchela deppi.”

Christoph Waltz Rushed Off French Talk Show After Sounds of Gunfire

05/18/2013 at 07:55 AM EDT

A live outdoor television broadcast from the Cannes Film Festival was briefly interrupted Friday when what sounded like gunshots sent crew and spectators scurrying for cover.

Actors Christoph Waltz and Daniel Auteuil were among guests being interviewed on the Canal Plus program Le Grand Journal when what sounded like gunfire rang out.

Television footage showed Auteuil and Academy Award winner Waltz – a member of the Cannes festival jury – scrambling from the seaside stage with dozens of others as a voice said “there’s someone shooting.”

When transmission resumed minutes later, host Michel Denisot said the noise had been caused by blanks. There were no reports of injuries.

Photographs showed a man being wrestled to the ground by police near the stage beside Cannes’ seafront promenade, the Croisette.

Local newspaper Nice-Matin reported that a man was detained by police with a starter’s pistol, a pocket knife and a plastic grenade.

Police could not immediately be reached for comment.

In the Kitchen with Sandra Lee

05/17/2013 at 07:15 PM EDT

Food Network star Sandra Lee created an all-white oasis in the kitchen of her Westchester, N.Y., home, because “our days are so cluttered with stuff we have to do – chores, homework and work – so I try to keep the kitchen as uncluttered as possible.”

That is until her boyfriend, New York governor Andrew Cuomo, 55, and his daughters Cara and Mariah, 18, and Michaela, 15, come home for dinner.

“We all chip in,” says Lee, 46. “Some cook, some clean, some stand in front of the refrigerator and just stare, because they just can’t decide on what they want!”

While the governor is known for his grilled chicken (“It’s perfect,” says Lee), “We have lots of chicken dishes and pasta, and the girls love my red cabbage salad,” says the Emmy-winning cook. “But some nights we order in, anything from Chinese food to pizza.”

Cooking lessons are on the table as well.

“We do a lot of baking, and I try to share tidbits that I was taught by my grandmother,” says Lee. “It’s a family affair when we’re in the kitchen.”
