Sarah Wright Olsen: ‘I Believe In The Village Mentality’

Marry Me star Sarah Wright Olsen covers the latest issue of Vulkan and opens up about family life with husband, NCIS: Los Angeles actor Eric Christian Olsen, their two kids — son Wyatt, 4, and 1-year-old daughter Esmé — and starring alongside Tom Cruise in American Made.

On her online community Your Zen Mama: “My friend, partner, and soul sister Teresa Palmer and I created Your Zen Mama to grow a community of mamas, papas, caregivers, doctors, doulas, and anyone in the birth or parenting world. We wanted a safe and positive space to share our stories and to learn from others. What is unique is that everyone here has a voice. If you want to write about pregnancy, postpartum, the 5 best cities to take a three-year-old or anything related to that field, YZM is an outlet to share, collaborate, and to be heard. We both live away from our family, but we believe in the ‘village’ mentality, and appreciate the knowledge we can acquire from everyone.”

On her best advice to new mothers: “Do the research. Read books, articles, blog posts, join a mommy group. Gather all this information, and trust your instinct on what works for your family.”

On maintaining balance: “I have a great team. My husband is an incredible partner who balances a full schedule with being an amazing dad to our kids. Whether that’s rushing home full of excitement to read the bedtime books or do bath routines. We have a nanny for work days, who also happens to be a birth doula, and an early childhood educator. I have a fantastic network of friends, and grandparents eager to fly into town and help when last minute work trips come up. To help with stress; yoga, a bubble bath, and a mud mask. Nothing makes me feel better than stretching and breathing. A half hour in the morning can set the tone for a more relaxed day. My kids even love it. Wyatt is very proud of his tree pose.”

On working with Tom Cruise: “He’s very funny. His energy and drive motivates people and sets the tone for a positive, open work space. He is the most professional person I have ever worked with. He is thoughtful, gracious, and so inclusive in the process. He and Doug told me from the beginning when we would rehearse a scene that I could do no wrong, that we would try things many different ways and find something great. That was very freeing for me, it helped me to remain loose and play with the character. You can’t ask for a better teammate.”
