Rihanna, You Can Spend All The Money You Want To On Your Hair

So, people are kind of freaking out over the report from the New York Post this morning that Rihanna spent $24,000 to fly her hairstylist from L.A. to London because her hair was messed up. OK, yes, that is a lot of money. And we’re sure they have hairstylists in London. BUT, when you consider the details, this really isn’t all that shocking. First, we’re talking about Rihanna, whose every haircut and outfit change becomes a headline, for better or worse. And the girl knows that appearing in a cap for two days in a row is not doing wonders for her image (nor is that all-denim outfit, my dear, fyi). Second, this isn’t just any old barber. This is Ursula Stephen, the woman who created “The Rihanna” cut back in 2008 and has been partially responsible for making RiRi as much a style icon as she is a pop star. According to the Post, the newly blond bombshell experienced a lapse in judgment (not her first in recent weeks, ahem) and subjected her locks to a swimming pool, a steam room and a sauna, resulting in a matted, tangled mess. She probably tried very hard to fix it herself — much the way we’ve botched many a bang trim on our own — before giving in and calling Ursula. And we doubt this is the first time Ms. Stephen has had to make an emergency house call, either. Just look at this video from Essence about how much stars depend on her expertise.

And anyway, do we really want to live in a world where we don’t have Rihanna’s myriad hairstyles to brighten our day? She’s doing a service for us all, frankly.

RIHANNA and her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown have allegedly been secretly hooking up.

The 24-year-old pop beauty collaborated with the R&B star — who was convicted for assaulting the ‘Russian Roulette’ hitmaker in 2009 — on her latest single ‘Birthday Cake’ and the pair have reportedly rekindled their romance, which has left Rihanna’s friend and mentor Jay-Z “deeply disgusted”.

A source close to the situation told RadarOnline: “Jay was absolutely disgusted by what Chris did to Rihanna. Jay doesn’t understand how a man could ever lay hands on a woman; it just goes against who he is and about. Chris is absolutely dead to Jay, he wants nothing to do with him ever.

“Now that Rihanna is hooking up with Chris and recording songs with him, Jay is deeply disappointed in her actions. He can’t fathom why Rihanna is doing the things she is doing.”

Jay is said to be “adamant” Rihanna should never forget what Chris – who is thought to be dating model Karrueche Tran – did to her when they were together, while the ’99 Problems’ rapper is concerned about what her fans will think about the pair’s secret rendezvous.

The source added: “He understands the need for forgiveness, but he is adamant that Rihanna shouldn’t forget what Chris did to her.

“Jay wonders what kind of message this is sending to Rihanna’s young female fans. Rihanna knows how Jay feels about Chris, but she doesn’t care, she is going to do what she wants.”

The 42-year-old rapper — whose wife Beyonce Knowles gave birth to their first child, daughter Blue Ivy, last month — is said to have warned Rihanna that meeting up with Chris again “isn’t going to end well”.

The insider added: “He is even more protective of the women in his life. Jay has told Rihanna he will never give his blessing for what she is doing with Chris. He has told her, this isn’t going to end well, it never does. In Jay’s opinion, Chris has rage issues that he doesn’t think have been dealt with.”

As Chris Brown continues his Twitter battles with the likes of Miranda Lambert and WWE heavyweight champ CM Punk, and Rihanna’s dating status is being debated — is she with Rob Kardashian, as Media Takeout purports, or is she considering reuniting with Chris, as TMZ says? — a lot of conversations we had back in 2009, after his brutal assault on her, are also resurfacing. After they dropped two collaborations on Rihanna’s birthday Monday, we decided to ask a couple of experts on domestic violence to answer the question burning in our minds: Is it possible that Chris has reformed, as he claims, and that a renewed relationship (friends or more) is not the crazy bad idea some think it is?

“We have to believe that there is opportunity for people to change, but it does not happen on its own. It requires a lot of work and the person has to want to change that behavior,” said Marjorie Gilberg, executive director of Break the Cycle, an organization that tries to teach both young victims and abusers how to change the patterns of violence in their lives. And while she believes change is possible, particularly in someone so young, Brown’s “outbursts” on Twitter and elsewhere aren’t great evidence that he’s done so. “I also think it’s not that probable that he would be able to have a healthy relationship with Rihanna, because they already have a pattern of communication and behavior. It’s difficult to change once you get in to that routine of it.

“I hope that they both can heal from it, and I hope that they can have healthier and happier relationships for the rest of their lives because they’re both very young,” Gilberg added. “I wouldn’t suggest that it was the greatest idea to have that relationship with one another.”

The possibility of a reunion between the stars is troubling for Jane Randel, the director of Love Is Not Abuse, Liz Claiborne’s initiative to combat and prevent teen dating abuse. Women typically return to their abusers seven times before finally breaking off the relationship, and if Rihanna does that, “I think the message that she’s sending to her fans is confusing. … It does seem to make it OK, that she’s OK with it all … whatever it was.”

Whether she wants to be or not, Rihanna is a role model for young women, and women ages 16 to 24 are the most at risk for being in an abusive relationship, Randel said. But both Randel and Gilberg hope that they can turn this into a constructive conversation with young people, particularly the ones who have been defending Chris’ behavior and blaming Rihanna for what happened in 2009.

“Let’s just pretend, for argument’s sake, that she started it, that she did whatever to piss him off,” Randel said. “He had a choice. He could pull the car over or he can ask her to get out. He could remove himself. He can defend himself, but that doesn’t mean punching her in the face. There were lots of different choices he had to make, so that what happened didn’t happen.”

Gilberg said the tweets some girls posted during the Grammys, saying that Chris Brown could beat them up, showed how much people have yet to learn about the gravity of domestic violence. “It’s unfortunate, but it’s a teaching moment, a way to engage young people on this issue and get them thinking why would anyone say, ‘He can beat me up anytime.’ Why would someone put that on their Twitter page? And, what do you think they were really thinking when you said that?”

Rosie O’Donnell Feels Chris Brown’s Pain

A lot of people claim that the Chris Brown and Rihanna incident isn’t anyone’s business except their own. Whether or not you agree on that point, we can all agree on one thing: it is definitely none of Rosie O’Donnell‘s beeswax. Rosie On’Donnell defended Chris Brown on her Sirius show Rosie Radio this morning, arguing “I just don’t know why this kid seems to be held to a different standard than anyone else.” O’Donnell’s statement seems to imply that there is someone on the planet who could have pulled off Chris Brown’s GMA meltdown without the world giving him or her the extreme side-eye. Unless Rosie is just pointing out that the 6 billion non-famous people on Earth would have been straight-up arrested for shattering a window with a chair. In which case yeah, there is a double standard.

O’Donnell went so far as cast blame on GMA anchor Robin Roberts for asking Brown questions about his domestic abuse of Rihanna. “I felt mildly angry at Robin Roberts. I felt like writing her and going: ‘Can you take a look at this again and see if maybe you find — in any way — your responsibility in this?” Rosie said. O’Donnell also likened Brown’s rage to the frustration she felt during her tumultuous stint on another day-time talk show: “Part of me wanted to take a chair and throw it through the window at The View after all that happened.” Somehow we think talking about hurling furniture while a panicky Barbara Walter screams in the background isn’t going to help anyone at this point. Maybe save your comments for a more appropriate time, Rosie. Like, perhaps never.
