Girl Meets World finally makes its way to the Disney Channel Friday – but the spin-off’s stars from the original series admit they were skeptical at first.

“I asked a few questions,” Danielle Fishel tells PEOPLE, about her reaction when the show’s creator Michael Jacobs approached her. “I said, ‘Okay, so she’s going to be a girl and how old is she going to be? What are her focuses like? Is the whole show going to be a love story or is it going to be something different? Is she going to have goals?’ It’s really important to me that if we’re going to do a show like this now, with a female lead, that she’s smart and has interests outside of boys and clothes.”

But it turns out the ’90s star had no reason to worry: “He was like, ‘Absolutely, she’s going to be very well-rounded – the perfect mix of Cory and Topanga, definitely more like Cory with the neuroses,’ ” Fishel, 33, says. “Then [I was] very excited.”

Fishel’s Boy Meets World costar Ben Savage (aka Cory Matthews) had some initial doubts, too.

“We were very careful to make sure the show was something we were all passionate about and something that we thought did the original series justice,” Savage, 33, says, noting the new series should appease fans old and new.

“A lot of Boy Meets World fans have expressed a little fear or nervousness that it’s on the Disney Channel and is just going to be a kids show,” Savage adds. “But I think we’ve done a really nice job catering to all of our demographics and all of our audiences. And we definitely kept in mind how we got here.”

Even the kids of Girl Meets World kept the show’s history in mind – despite the fact that they weren’t even born when the series originally aired.

“When I got the show, my sisters got me all of the DVDs, and then I watched all of it so I definitely know my stuff,” says Sabrina Carpenter, who plays Maya, best friend of Cory and Topanga’s daughter, Riley.

Carpenter and Rowan Blanchard (who plays Riley) both admit to screaming when they were cast. “No matter who you are, you grow up watching Disney,” Blanchard says. “You just don’t think you’re going to be the one like ‘Hi, I’m Rowan Blanchard, and you’re watching Disney channel.’ “

Another perk of working with some pros? Advice from former child stars. “She really teaches us how to stay humble,” Blanchard says of Fishel. “She’s been through it all. Ben and her were 12 and in the same business, and I think that’s the real beauty of it: They can help us transition and she’s just really been there for us.”

We’re not saying your individual support for the Boy Meets World spin-off Girl Meets World will guarantee the show will make it to air. However, if every single person between the ages of 30 and 18 retweeted this post, well, we’re sure Mr. Disney would take notice. Oh, Walt Disney’s dead? We see. Well, in his loving memory we can’t stop squealing over the news that Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel have officially signed on to play Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence (’cause you know girl is keeping her last name) in the upcoming show pilot.

According to TVLine, Girl takes place “more than a decade” after the initial show and centers on Cory and Topanga raising their daughter, eighth grader Riley. Apparently the show is in “the very early stages of development,” and a national search is on for the perfect tween actress to play Riley. Ugh, why didn’t we have a kid at 15 just in case this happened? Think, Vh1 Celebrity, think! No word yet on whether William Daniels will return as Mr. Feeny, but maybe if everyone in the world writes him a letter and they have to carry sacks and sacks of mail into his living room like in A Miracle on 34th Street? Alternately…hey, they made Tupac a hologram. They can probably render a mustache and tweed jacket pretty well too.

What do you see when you turn out the light?

Well, from here it looks like a Wonder Years reunion. Because that’s exactly what it is.

The cast of the beloved show reunited to film extras for the show’s upcoming DVD release, and star Jason Hervey Tweeted a series of pics with fellow cast members, as did Fred Savage. Indeed, the gang is all here: Dan Lauria, Alley Mills, Olivia d’Abo, Danica McKeller and Josh Saviano.

The show, which ran from 1988-1993 on ABC, is currently streaming on Netflix, so if you’re that desperately starved for nostalgia (we know we are), you can bing-watch the whole thing there.

(Side note: Whatever McKellar’s secret is, we will pay dearly for it. She looks fantastic. Spill the beans, Cooper: Is it math? Dancing? Some kind of Faustian pact with Avril Lavigne? )

Boy Meets World star Danielle Fishel is still walking on air a week after tying the knot with Tim Belusko.

“I keep calling him ‘my husband,’ ” she tells PEOPLE of newlywed life. “It’s awesome!”

She also shared one of her favorite (and private) moments from the big day on Oct. 19.

“Tim and I went into the reception room before all the guests were let in,” she says. “When I saw how beautiful it was and all the hard work I had put into it, my breath was taken away. Tim I danced alone on the dance floor for a few minutes. We took it all in.”

And the actress couldn’t help but shed a few tears before the ceremony.

“I started to cry when I first started walking down the aisle,” Fishel says. “It’s hard to prepare yourself for the amount of love you feel in that room. I felt beautiful.”

The reception was held at LA’s Vibiana – decked out in Old Hollywood style – and Fishel was reunited with Boy Meets World costar Ben Savage and Home Improvement‘s Jonathan Taylor Thomas, with his date Emily Craft.

The happily married Fishel (who will use Belusko personally), is ecstatic about her new journey. “This is my family now,” she says. “We’re in this together.”
