NEW YORK, NY (July 29, 2013) — DoSomething.org and VH1 announced today that Sara Bareilles, J. Cole and Fitz and The Tantrums will perform as part of the star-studded Do Something Awards<http://www.vh1.com/shows/events/do_something_awards/2012/> (#DSAwards) along with appearances by VH1 You Oughta Know artist Johnnyswim, Penguin Prison and recently added celebrity presenters Darren Criss, Queen Latifah, Michelle Monaghan, Matthew Morrison, NE-YO and Joan & Melissa Rivers. The awards will air live on VH1 on Wednesday, July 31 at 8:00 p.m. ET.

This year’s high-energy show is hosted by actress Sophia Bush and will honor celebrities Patrick Dempsey, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jennifer Hudson, LL COOL J and Kelly Osbourne for being amazing social change leaders, along with five “do-gooders,” 25 and under, who are in the trenches, creating substantial change in our world.

“We are going to laugh, we are going to cry and we are going to party! With performances from Sara Bareilles, J. Cole and Fitz and The Tantrums, this year’s show is bound to hit a high note with fans of every genre,” said Nancy Lublin, CEO and Chief Old Person of DoSomething.org.

“We scored incredible music giants for the Do Something Awards again this year. These artists are chart toppers in their different genres of music…much like our incredible finalists and honorees,” said Lee Rolontz, VH1’s Executive Vice President of Music Production.

Sara Bareilles is a singer-songwriter, pianist and multi-platinum selling artist who achieved mainstream success in 2007 with the hit single “Love Song,” which brought her into the number one spot on the Billboard Pop 100 chart. She has sold over 2 million records and over 12 million singles worldwide and has been nominated for a Grammy Award three times. In the third season of NBC’s The Sing-Off, Bareilles was a celebrity judge alongside ben Folds and Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men. In February 2012, VH1 placed Bareilles in the 80thspot of the Top 100 Greatest Women in Music. Her current album, “The Blessed Unrest,” just debuted at #2 with rave reviews.

J. Cole, is a German-born American hip-hop recording artist and record producer from Fayetteville, North Carolina. The first artist to be signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation record label, J. Cole is celebrated for his lyricism, self-produced sturdy beats and storytelling. His long-awaited debut album, entitled “Cole World: The Sideline Story,” was released on September 27, 2011 and debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, Top R&B Albums and Top Rap Albums chart, selling more than 218,000 in its first week and has since been RIAA certified Gold. J. Cole received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist the 54th Grammy Awards and is also a 2-time American Music Award Nominee. J. Cole released his highly anticipated, self-produced sophomore album, “Born Sinner,” on June 18th. The album has since hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart and sold Gold. The lead single and number-one hit “Power Trip” featuring Miguel is RIAA certified Platinum.

Brimming with imagination, energy, and genre-smashing scope, Fitz and The Tantrums defied the odds to become an indisputable phenomenon, a chart-topping, show-stopping modern pop combo unlike any other. Now, with their spectacular Elektra Recordsdebut, More Than Just A Dream, the Los Angeles-based sextet have ramped up the timeless songcraft and soul sonic force that made them a worldwide sensation to fashion a kaleidoscopic milestone that delivers on the promise of their 2010 breakthrough, Pickin’ Up The Pieces. Songs like the impossibly catchy first single, “Out Of My League” are positively brazen with verve and vivacity, demonstrating all the drama and passion of the band’s famed live shows. From the charged back-and-forth between co-lead vocalists Fitz and Noelle Scaggs to the incontrovertible power of The Tantrums in full flight, More Than Just A Dream is the sound of a great band taking it right to the edge.

In addition to honoring celebrities for their work to inspire others, and a night filled with great musical performances, one young “do-er” (age 25 and under) will receive a grand prize of $100,000 for their cause. This is the largest and most prestigious prize in the world for young people and social change.

This year’s five nominees have gone above and beyond to make a difference addressing important issues. Nominees include Sasha Fisher (Spark MicroGrants); Daniel Maree (Million Hoodies Movement for Justice); Jillian Mourning (All We Want is LOVE – Liberation of Victims Everywhere); Lorella Praeli (United We Dream); and Ben Simon (Food Recovery Network).
