Amid all the rubble and wreckage caused by the Oklahoma tornado, Barbara Garcia stumbled upon a ray of hope.

“I was sitting on the stool, holding my dog – this was the game plan through the years, to go in that little bathroom,” she told CBS News reporter Anna Werner while surveying the damage done to her home. “The electric went off in the bathroom, and about the same time, I felt the stool come up out of the floor … I never lost consciousness and I hollered for my little dog and he didn’t answer or didn’t come, so I know he’s in here somewhere.”

As she continued to survey the situation with Werner – “This is life in the big city,” Garcia said – a member of the interview crew caught sight of the dog struggling to force its way out from beneath the rubble.

“Bless your little bitty heart,” Garcia said, while a member of the crew helped it escape the debris, and reunite with its grateful owner.

“I thought God just answered one prayer, let me be okay,” Garcia said. “He answered both of them. Because this was my second prayer.”

ABC Upfronts Bring Monster Enemies and Monster Laughs

05/15/2013 at 10:10 AM EDT

ABC’s upfront Tuesday afternoon was an upbeat affair – not all upfronts are – with shoutouts to breakout hit Scandal and its star, Kerry Washington; to late-night host Jimmy Kimmel; and to now destined-to-retire Barbara Walters.

Kimmel, as is traditional, did a few minutes’ worth of jokes at the expense of the other networks (he referred to CBS as “smug @#%&!!!!s”) and his own: He suggested that Splash, the diving-celeb reality show, should be replaced by one with an empty pool. To be called Splat.

The clips introducing new shows were, on balance, pretty promising. These are the ones that struck my television tuning fork and filled me with anticipatory vibrations:

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.LD. Producer-writer-director Joss Whedon’s network spinoff of the ginormously popular Avengers. Clark Gregg, borrowed from Marvel’s supehero movie franchise, heads an agency that keeps an eye out for dangerous forces, insidious monsters and so on. Lots of action, of course, and some welcome deadpan humor.

Super Fun Night. A sitcom starring the un-Lena Dunham, Rebel Wilson. Looks vulgar, dumb and altogether delightful.

The Goldbergs. The audience of advertisers at the upfront seemed most receptive to this family sitcom starring Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Wendi McClendon-Covey (Bridesmaids). The novelty factor is that it’s set in the ’80s and includes video footage shot by their 11-year-old son. At first glance, sort of Malcolm in the Middle-ish. But when do you get sitcom parents as good as those two?

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. I’ve never been crazy about Once Upon a Time, partly because of a visceral distaste for anything involving Rumpelstiltskin. But Alice in Wonderland, the jumping-off point for this spinoff fantasy, mines a psychologically and mythically richer source. This Alice (Sophie Lowe) is in love with a genie, presumably found in a bottle and not Lewis Carroll’s original. I couldn’t figure out much else from the clip. Curioser and curioser, you know?

Barbara Walters is retiring.

The veteran ABC News anchor, 83, is set to announce Monday morning on The View that she will retire from TV journalism next summer.

ABC said in an announcement late Sunday that, until then, Walters will continue to anchor and report for the network, anchor specials throughout the year, and appear on The View.

“I am very happy with my decision,” Walters said, “and look forward to a wonderful and special year ahead.”

She added: “I do not want to appear on another program or climb another mountain. I want instead to sit on a sunny field and admire the very gifted women – and, okay, some men, too – who will be taking my place.”

She will remain executive producer of The View, the weekday talk show she created in 1997.

Walters has spent 37 years at ABC News, joining the network in 1976 to become the first female co-anchor on an evening news program. Three years later, she became a co-host of ABC’s 20/20 newsmagazine.

Before coming to ABC, she spent 15 years at NBC News, where she was a co-host of the Today show.

Michelle Knight, one of the three women found in Cleveland after disappearing 10 years ago, hasn’t seen her mother since her rescue on Monday.

“I started crying and I was happy that they found her because I’ve been looking for her and I just don’t want her to think that I forgot about her,” Barbara Knight told Today‘s Savannah Guthrie on Wednesday of learning that her daughter had been found inside the home of alleged kidnapper Ariel Castro.

“I just wish my daughter would reach out and let me know that she’s there,” she added.

While the other two abduction victims reunited with their families after being checked at the hospital, Knight’s situation is more complicated.

According to several media reports, the 4-foot-7-inch tall Knight, had some mental impairment before the ordeal.

“She had a mind of a child. She was slow,” cousin Brenda Dinickle tells CNN.

Then she may have been beaten while in captivity – she reportedly had hearing loss and damage to some of the bones in her face, Fox8 in Cleveland reports.

Knight remains in the hospital Wednesday, and was listed in good condition, according to The Plain Dealer.

Strained Relationship

When Knight does leave the hospital, it’s unclear whether she will return to Barbara Knight, who admits that her relationship with her daughter Michelle was strained when she disappeared in August of 2002.

“The way I understood it by certain people, they told me that maybe she didn’t want [anything] to do with me,” Barbara said. “But still in my heart I thought, no, because I know my Michelle.”

According to Barbara, Michelle had lost custody of her son. NBC News reports she went missing the day of a schedule court appearance in the custody case. And police told Barbara, she said, that they believed she had left on her own accord.

“Because she was 20 they figured she just left because of the upset because of the baby and everything,” she said.

For 10 years, Barbara noted, she held out hope that her daughter would be found alive. “I had my doubts but then I looked on the bright side,” she said. “I prayed for some kind of thing to tell me at least if she’s alive or not.”

Now, though their relationship was strained, Barbara hopes she and Michelle can reconcile and reunite.

“I love you and I missed you all this time,” Barbara said. “Hopefully, whatever happened between us, if something did, I hope it heals.”
