Amanda Berry’s Cousin Remembers Little Girl Who Loved Eminem, Fashion Design

05/13/2013 at 03:30 PM EDT

To those who have heard her story, Amanda Berry is the girl who disappeared at age 16 on April 21, 2003. She’s the girl who was held captive with two others near downtown Cleveland for about 10 years until she miraculously escaped last week, proclaiming, “I’m free now.”

But who was she before she vanished and was held captive in the home of alleged kidnapper Ariel Castro?

Her cousin, Tina Miller, tells PEOPLE about a girl with Eminem posters hanging in her bedroom and dreams of being a fashion designer. She’s Mandy. She’s hyper-organized, close to her nieces and she loved the movie 8 Mile and its star, Eminem.

In fact, “She had just bought a cell phone before she went missing,” Miller, of Lorain, Ohio, tells PEOPLE of Berry, now 27 and the mother of a 6-year-old daughter.

The Amanda Berry she knew worked at Burger King and did well in school. “She was always so smart,” adds Miller. “Mandy was always in the magnet programs in school. I recall going to her house, and whatever song was playing, Mandy knew.”

Alongside her passion for music, Berry loved clothes as a young girl. “She would wear Tommy Hilfiger and Nautica. It was really big back then,” Miller says. “She refused to cross-contaminate Tommy Hilfiger and Nautica. It was either all Tommy or all Nautica.”

She may have been a “girly girl,” but she was also “a little firecracker,” recalls Miller. “I remember Mandy having a smart mouth.”

Ariel Castro’s two brothers have disowned and distanced themselves from their sibling, whom they consider “a monster” who should of rot in jail following his arrest last week on accusations of kidnapping and holding three young women captive in his grimy Cleveland home for up to a decade until their rescue last Monday.

“I had nothing to do with this, and I don’t know how my brother got away with it for so many years,” Pedro Castro, 54, in a joint interview with his brother Onil Castro, 50, conducted by CNN’s Martin Savidge this weekend.

Initially believed to be potential suspects, Pedro and Onil were arrested last week and then released when authorities said the brothers had no involvement in the kidnappings. Their 52-year-old, middle brother, remains in a Cleveland jail on $8 million bond, charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape.

Last week, Ariel’s daughter, Angie Gregg, said her father was dead to her. In the meantime, say Pedra and Onil, they have received death threats. Their reason for speaking to CNN, they said, was because they “want the world to know” they had no idea what their brother was doing.

Ariel: ‘You’re Never Going to See Me Again’

Speculating on how the long horror story finally came to a close, Onil told CNN about Ariel: “Maybe he wanted to get caught. Maybe time was up. Maybe he was inside too much; he wanted to get caught. But if he did it that way, he shouldn’t of went to mama’s house and picked me up and put me in a car, if he knows that [Arrest] was going to happen.”

In jail, the three brothers were placed in separate cells, with Pedro and Onil going for more than 36 hours before they learned that they were suspected of kidnapping.

Onil saw Ariel head toward the toilet. “When he walked past me, he goes, ‘Onil, you’re never going to see me again. I love you bro.’ And that was it. And he put his fist up for a bump.”

After he returned from the toilet, Onil said, “He goes ‘Onil, I’m sorry. You didn’t know nothing about this, Onil. I’m sorry, Onil.’ And that was it. And then that’s when I broke down on my way over there. I said, ‘What did my brother do? What did he do?’ “

During interrogation, Onil learned what had happened when he was shown photos of Gina DeJesus and Amanda Berry. “My heart fell,” he said. “I just dropped, not physically, but I just, I just hit the ground.”

‘He’s a Loner’

According to Pedro, brother Ariel “was a strange dude” who remained “a little apart” from the rest of the family and “strange to me all through our lives.”

Weeks, even months, would go by when the family would not hear from Ariel, said Pedro. “Mama use to say, ‘Check your brother, check on your brother. He lives alone in that house. He’s a loner. You don’t know if he’s okay or what’s going on.’ ” The two would then text.

Had the brothers been aware of what was happening in Ariel’s house, “I would have went straight to the police if I seen anything,” Onil said. “If I knew, I would have reported it,” Pedro said. “Brother or no brother.”

Onil now considers Ariel as a “monster,” not a brother. “The monster is a goner,” he said., adding: “I hope he rots in that jail. I don’t even want them to take his life like that. I want him to suffer in that jail to the last extent. I don’t care if they even feed him. What he has done to my life and my family’s.”

The Voice Reveals Top 12

The Voice

05/08/2013 at 10:25 PM EDT

The Voice‘s celeb coaches looked visibly pained Wednesday night before having to send home one of their own contestants.

Shakira – whose team performed Tuesday along with Blake Shelton‘s singers – couldn’t even wave to the camera when she was introduced at the top of the show. “I couldn’t sleep last night because of what I knew I had to go through today,” she said. “I know my heart is going to break into 100 pieces.”

Usher and Shelton looked equally anguished about having to send home one of the singers, whom American did not save. Adam Levine – whose all-female team performed Monday alongside Usher’s group – was so torn that he didn’t blurt out his choice until credits were rolling.

So who went home Wednesday night? Keep reading to find out …

Blake’s all-country team was up first – with Justin Blake and The Swon Brothers in the bottom two.

Although Rivers earned rave reviews the previous night, Shelton chose to save the only duo of the season, The Swon Brothers, Colton and Zach. He made his decision “for the sake of just keeping things as different and diverse as I can,” he said.

On Team Shakira, Sasha Allen and pop-soul singer Kris Thomas were saved, leaving powerhouse Karina Iglesias and Garrett Gardner, 17, in the bottom two.

Shakira looked sincerely heartbroken, but ultimately chose to save Garder because, as she explained, “I think I can make you improve a lot more.”

Team Usher was in the hot seat next – and America saved indie introvert Michelle Chamuel and R&B singer Vedo, leaving Usher to decide between former model Josiah Hawley and Latina pop singer Cathia. He ultimately chose Hawley.

Team Adam’s four strong females closed the show, and it was revealed that America saved Judith Hill and country singer Amber Carrington, leaving folk singer Caroline Glaser and Sarah Simmons in the bottom two.

Levine had an incredibly tough time making up his mind because, he said, he loved them both. “Whatever decision I make will not be one that I support,” he said, adding later, “This is killing me right now.”

As the credits rolled, he finally said he would save Simmons.

The top 12 will compete with a new set of live performances beginning Monday.

Tom Arnold Dishes On Son’s Name & The Birth

New parents Ashley and Tom Arnold recently spoke to People about their son Jax – born on April 6.

Asked on how the couple came up with the name Jax Copeland – Tom explained, “My dad’s name is Jack and I wanted to honor him, but not too much. I am a fan of and worked on Sons of Anarchy and my favorite character’s name is Jax. We just thought it was a cool name. Of course I called Kurt Sutter, the show creator, to get his blessing.”

He continued, “I’m best friends with Dax Shepard so that was also in the back of my head, too. We almost named him Jaxson, but the night before the birth I found out one of my brothers had named his mangy dog Jaxson. Obviously that made a change absolutely necessary! His middle name is Copeland because that was my grandma Dottie’s maiden name and she was a good lady.”

The comedic actor also shared what’s it’s like to finally be a father.

“All fat babies look like me, but babies change daily and soon he will be beautiful like his mother. I’ve worked diligently to become a father for 23 years. Twenty-one cycles of in-vitro with four different women, but the moment Jax was born I realized that this was exactly the way it was meant to be. I was ready because I was healthy and had the perfect partner.”

Regarding the birth the True Lies star said, “Every man will tell you there’s nothing that makes him crazier than seeing the woman you love in pain. Even little pains. Mostly because they tell you about each one. When a man’s wife is in pain, it triggers an “I gotta put that fire out!” panic alarm. It’s exhausting.”

Ashley added, “We ended up having to do a planned c-section because the baby was breech.”

Tom also revealed, “I was in shock when I saw him appear because up until that moment, I didn’t truly believe it would ever happen. The disappointments. The miscarriages. When you’ve tried and failed so many times, you eventually accept that it won’t happen for you.

“When I held him, I accepted he was real and though he is obviously too good for me, he will never doubt that his father loves him very much. I also felt a kind of super love for Ashley. An intimacy and partnership and accomplishment I did not know possible.”
