Angelina Jolie: ‘This Was the Right Thing to Do For Our Family’

05/18/2013 at 10:30 AM EDT

She was facing down the most frightening challenge of her life, but on Valentine’s Day of this year, Angelina Jolie was focused on nothing more than dinosaurs, bugs and precious family time.

When the star visited the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles on Feb. 14 with fiancé Brad Pitt and their 4-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox, “the kids could barely contain themselves, but Brad and Angie spoke to them in quiet voices to calm them down,” says an observer. “They stayed back and let the kids explore fossils and insects on their own. They all seemed to have fun.”

Before Mom and Dad headed out for a romantic dinner later that evening, they gathered all six children together for a family gift exchange – the very sort of tradition Jolie’s mom, Marcheline Bertrand, delighted in fostering during Jolie’s own childhood. “The older kids had made art projects at school that they gave Brad and Angie,” says a family source. “Every special calendar day sparks a big celebration for them.”

It would be the last such celebration before the surgery that Jolie would quietly undergo just two days later: On Feb. 16 – and with Pitt, 49, by her side – the 37-year-old Oscar winner underwent a preventive double mastectomy at the Pink Lotus Breast Center in Beverly Hills. In a candid op-ed published in the New York Times on May 14, the actress explained the gut-wrenching decision as a “proactive” choice that was “not easy” but “is one I am very happy I made.”

Noting that her mother died of ovarian cancer at age 56 and that she herself had tested positive for the “faulty” BRCA1 gene, Jolie – who kept up her globe-trotting humanitarian work with trips to the Congo and London during her ordeal – said the operation reduced her chances of developing breast cancer from 87 percent “to under 5 percent.”

“I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer,” she added.

Pitt, whom she praised for being with her “for every minute of the surgeries,” offered his own words of support. Calling Jolie’s choice he added, “All I want is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children. This is a happy day for our family.”

Pitt’s mother Jane echoed that. “We’re so very proud of Angie,” she said. “This means so much to our family, especially our grandchildren We love her dearly.”

It was a PEOPLE magazine cover to honor Susan Lucci’s first Emmy victory, and now it will be on display forever at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

On Thursday, Lucci was on hand in Washington, D.C., to officially sign over the pink satin dress and pink bejeweled Manolo Blahnik heels she wore for the June 7, 1999, issue celebrating her win after 19 consecutive nominations. Also donated was an original copy of the magazine, and Lucci completed the offering with an autographed copy of an original All My Children script from when she played TV vixen Erica Kane.

“When this PEOPLE magazine came out, the people at All My Children blew it up right away,” Lucci told PEOPLE. “It was framed in the hair and makeup room from the day I won, until the day All My Children went off the air at ABC.”

“And they also put one outside of my dressing room, so that it said my name and then there was the cover,” she said. “It’s a very big deal to be a solo cover on PEOPLE magazine. It was at that time and it remains that.”

What Lucci remembers of the Smithsonian-worthy dress: “I bought it at Bergdorf Goodman. I don’t remember who it’s by. I just know that I loved it and it’s French.”

“Although I’d still love to wear this dress and these shoes,” Lucci added, “I’m so honored that the Smithsonian would like them.”

But it will take some getting used to.

“I don’t think that I have wrapped my mind around [seeing my things at the Smithsonian] quite yet,” she said. “I picked up my shoe and they said, ‘No, from now on you can’t touch anything unless you are wearing white gloves.’ There’s a lot that goes with this. It’s an honor. It’s a place I have visited with my own children. The Smithsonian is a big deal in our collective American mentality.”

Now that the Smithsonian has partnered with the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences – simultaneously accepting a donation from Jeopardy host Alex Trebek – her family has an even bigger reason to visit.

“They probably won’t be impressed at all because they remember it,” Lucci said. “But my own children are very impressed. My son called me on the way here to say, ‘This is such a big deal, mom! Tweet how you feel.’ And I did, I tweeted that I was thrilled!

Lucci’s only other wish: “That my father, a history buff, was here today to see me in the Smithsonian.”

American Idol finalists unveil how they select songs for the competition, the cast of Wayne’s World reunites, and sorority girls get some love from the drama geeks.

  • Boston is very much in our hearts and minds following last week’s devastating events. Native son Mark Wahlberg would do anything to help heal his beloved hometown and he apparently hasn’t ruled out doing a fundraiser with the Funky Bunch. We’re rooting for him to make it happen. [TMZ]
  • It’s hard to believe the 1992 flick Wayne’s World just turned 21. Was it really that long ago when we imitated Wayne and Garth headbanging to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody?” The cast reunited in Beverly Hills for a screening of the hit film. [Us Magazine]

  • In the history of high school cliques, the aspiring thespians never quite mixed with the aspiring sorority girls. But the clip below clearly convinces us that we’ve been wrong all along. (The language is a bit salty and NSFW, heads up!)

Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom took Flynn to run around at play space Romp in West Hollywood, Calif. on Thursday (April 11).

The 2-year-old tot showed off his big smile while walking with mom. He stood out in a wool hat and neon shirt. Later on Orlando was seen carrying him back to their car.

Rumors of Kerr leaving Victoria’s Secret has been shot down by the brand’s president and chief marketing officer, Ed Razek.

According to US Weekly, Kerr’s contract wasn’t renewed because “she was not a big seller for VS” and “had a difficult reputation.”

Razek denied the claims stating, Miranda Kerr is one of the best models in the history of the business – and easily one of the most popular. She is also a consummate professional. Any rumors to the contrary are simply untrue.”

He added, “While her international commitments have kept her away from us more than we’d like over the past few years, she will always be an Angel to me. We have no plans to stop working with her. In fact, I’ve already invited her to walk the runway in this year’s fashion show and, happily, she’s agreed.”
