DAVID Letterman has opened up about his retirement plans.
During Friday night’s Late Show monologue, Letterman made a series of jokes about breaking the news to CBS boss Les Moonves and the reason for leaving his longtime gig.
Letterman — who announced his plans to step down next year during Thursday night’s show – said that he called Moonves to break the news.
“I said, ‘I’m retiring,’ and there was a pause and he said, ‘Who is this?’” Letterman cracked.
Letterman then semi-addressed the reason for his retirement.
“People are saying to me, ‘Honestly quit the wise remarks [and] screwing around, why did you decide to announce your retirement?’” Letterman noted.
The CBS late-night host then claimed that the decision had come from a recent conversation with his makeup artist Jane.
“She says to me, ‘Dave, there’s really nothing more I can do,’” Letterman joked.
It’s also been claimed that Dave is retiring because he made a promise to his wife back in 2009.
Insiders say the star had intended to work well into his 70s — but was forced to put his family first, when, in 2009, he cheated on his wife, Regina Lasko, and admitted to having sexual relations with female members of his staff.
Former CBS producer Robert Joel “Joe” Halderman was accused of attempting to extort $2 million from Letterman.
Halderman allegedly told Letterman in September ’09 that unless he forked over the sum, his sexual relations with female staffers would be made public. So David was forced to dish the dirt himself.
The scandal rocked David, Regina and their young son Harry — so the star was forced to do the right thing by his wife and child, insiders allege.
“David promised Regina that he’d retire in 2015,” said an insider.
“He had originally planned to work until he was 70 — he loves his show — but Regina wanted him to scale back on his work, so that he could spend time at home with her and Harry.
“Obviously trust became an issue after David confessed to the affairs, so it was better all around for him to do what Regina wanted, or risk destroying his marriage even further!
“David doesn’t need the money, and is at retirement age anyway – so he’s looking forward to spending more time with his family, golfing – and going on lots of vacations!”
