He plays it tough on the big screen, but actor Mark Wahlberg saves his softer side for his wife Rhea Durham and their kids Ella, 8, Michael, 5, Brendan, 3, and Grace, 2. In a new interview with Men’s Journal magazine, the Contraband star opens up about about choosing Easter egg hunts over late nights out with the boys. (But a word of warning to Ella and Grace’s future suitors: Mark can still be a very protective papa when he needs to be!)

On settling down: “Yeah, a lot of people I thought were my friends were disappointed that I decided to settle down and don’t take them on whirlwind tours of craziness anymore. When I was the life of the party, I definitely wanted to bring as many people along for the ride as possible. But sooner or later, you find out who your friends are. If they were my friends, they would have been happy for me changing my life and growing up. I mean, because of Entourage, people think that my life is just a big, wild party. And it is. But these days it’s a big, wild Halloween party or Easter egg party. I don’t go out at night anymore. I don’t hang around with the guys. I don’t really play golf. I stopped smoking cigarettes. I stopped smoking pot a lot of years ago, too. I’m focused on my family, my faith, and my work.”

On being scheduled to be on one of the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center on 9/11:: “If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did. There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, ‘OK, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry.’”

On how he feels about his daughters one day dating: “I’m not going to think about that right now. When the time comes, I will, but it’s not a good thought for me to have. Thinking about it really stresses me out, so don’t stress me out right now, because that’s a stressful thought, OK?”

[Note: Mark issued a statement this afternoon apologizing for his comments on 9/11: "To suggest I would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible. To speculate about such a situation is ridiculous to begin with. I deeply apologize to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive, it was certainly not my intention."]

Mark Wahlberg Talks Missed 9/11 Flight, Rewrites History Mark-Wahlberg-Style

Mark Wahlberg, why are you bringing up 9/11 in an interview with Men’s Journal? Why are you bringing up 9/11 at all, especially to fantasize about how you could have stopped it from happening? In a new interview, the Contraband star went so far as to say if he had been a passenger on United Airlines flight 93, the events of September 11 would have gone a little different. “If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did,” Wahlberg claims. That’s a pretty big “if,” Mark. As in, the biggest “if” of all time.

What makes Wahlberg’s predictions kind of eerie (as well as somewhat insulting and inappropriate) is the fact that, were it not for Mark’s decision to take an earlier flight, he would have actually been on one of the planes that was hijacked by terrorists. “There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, ‘OK, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry,” imagines Wahlberg. Whaaaaa? Do you think Mark’s interviewer just asked about his daily gym regiment and he went off on his absurd tangent? Mark Wahlberg, you keep this up and we will not say hello to our mothers for you.
