Newly single Katie Holmes went grocery shopping at Whole Foods with her 6-year-old daughter Suri in New York City on Sunday (July 8). The day before, the actress was seen leaving her lawyer’s office after discussing her upcoming divorce from Tom Cruise.

Katie is seeking sole custody of Suri, leaving some to speculate that she’s “making it very clear she’s not going to let what happened with Nicole Kidman happen to her.”

Tom, who has not yet answered Katie’s divorce filing, is a longtime Scientologist, and his older children with Nicole Kidman – Bella, 19, and Connor, 17 – were raised in the controversial church.

Reportedly, children being raised in Scientology can begin the “sec checks” around Suri’s age, answering questions such as, “Have you done anything you are ashamed of?,” and, “Have you ever decided you did not like some member of your family?,” and “Have you ever gotten yourself dirty on purpose?”

“She is dead set on keeping custody of Suri,” a source tells Us Weekly. ”Katie is not going to compromise on certain issues, all regarding Suri,” the source adds. “This is about protecting her daughter.”

On Monday Tom and Katie released a joint statement asking for privacy as they work out a custody arrangement.

“We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri’s best interests. We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other’s commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other’s roles as parents.”
