Soccer Star Brandi Chastain On Life Lessons, Laundry Stains, Proud Parent Moments

Brandi Chastain is a professional American soccer defender and midfielder who plays for the team California Storm of Women’s Premier Soccer League and is a former member of the United States women’s national soccer team. She is best known for her game-winning penalty shootout kick against China in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup final and her bra-baring celebration afterwards.

Brandi is no stranger to stains. The World Cup champion is teaming up with Electrolux on Facebook for the Kicking and Cleaning campaign where fans can share their ‘Proud Parent Moments.’ The mom-of-two opens up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her own proud moments with sons Cameron, 23, and Jaden, 5, her best laundry tips and the London Summer Olympics.

CBS: Tell us about partnering with Electrolux to celebrate their new washers and dryers. As a mom-of-two, you surely know a thing or two about laundry and the importance of reliable appliances?!

BC: “As an athlete myself, I get sweaty and dirty everyday. I not only have my kids’ laundry to worry about, I have my own. As active parents and moms know, it is important for us to be as active as our kids, which means I have an extra amount of laundry that I have to get to.

To pair with Electrolux and the Kicking and Cleaning campaign is important to me for a couple of reasons. Number one, I always like to do my best, and Electrolux has the cleanest laundry out there. They produce the whitest whites and the most vibrant colors. When I am sending my kids out on the field, or when I am going out on the field, I want to intimidate the other team with how good I look. I want to bedazzle them with my skill, but if you can send your team out there looking good, it gives them an extra boost of confidence.

Electrolux is on Facebook doing a campaign where fans can share their ‘Proud Parent Moment.’ I can talk about my kids all day and share many moments where I loved the things they’ve done. At the same time, when parents share their moment, they will make a donation to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. If you can do something as simple as share a moment, and it benefits people by helping them with their health, it is a no-brainer to me. I am thrilled to be here, play some soccer with the kids, have some fun, and, at the same time, share a very positive message.”

CBS: What are some of your best laundry tips? Anything from not letting it pile up so much, to getting the worst-of-the-worst stains out.

BC: “I get sweaty, I get dirty—I actually have a picture of myself as a young kid head to-toe mud! I was one of the kids that wanted to find the mud puddle right away. I still do as an adult; I am not afraid to get dirty. My tip is to get that laundry into the wash as soon as you can. If you let it sit around, especially soccer jerseys and any sports uniform, it can smell pretty bad [laughs]! You don’t want that to exist in your jersey post-wash.

The good thing about the Electrolux System is that it is the cleanest wash out there. I know my uniforms are going to get clean and be the whitest of the whites and the most vibrant colors. I think my best tip is to get it into the laundry as soon as you can, and don’t let wet clothes sit on top of one another. I’ve done that, and it is not a good deal [laughs]!”

CBS: Tell us about your two boys. What are their names and ages? Do they get along well?

BC: “I have two boys. One is 23-years-old. His name is Cameron and he goes to law school. I also have a five-and-two-thirds-year-old named Jaden. He wouldn’t like it if I said five-year-old [laughs]. He is in kindergarten, and like I shared earlier with some folks, my ‘Proud Parent Moment’ is when I see them together and the big one is taking the time and being patient with the young one. The look in my five-year-old’s eyes when he looks at his big brother, whether they are out in the backyard playing soccer or baseball, and seeing them hug is very special to me. It is wonderful to see them together.”

CBS: How did your Olympic training and experiences prepare you for motherhood?

BC: “I think the greatest lessons I’ve learned for life came from soccer. I’ve had my ups and downs – I’ve been injured, I’ve been off the field, I’ve been cut from teams. I’ve really learned from perspective that in every moment that you have to work your hardest, you have to get yourself in the right frame of mind and mental state in terms of teamwork. Not one player can win or lose a game. Everybody matters, whether you are playing 90 minutes, whether you only get five minutes, or whether you get no minutes. Everyone contributes to the success of a team.

I also think being organized is truly something that I am still working on. As moms, we juggle many things. We have not only our business lives, but also our health to take care of. We also take care of other people in our lives: our kids, our extended families, our extended community. I think we carry a lot of weight on our shoulders, and the best way to do that is to be as organized as you possibly can. You also have to be as efficient as you can. I think that is why pairing up with Electrolux is so important to me. Not only do things get cleaned and look great after they are washed and dried, but also this can be done in a timely manner.

They also have a system where I can wash all of the stuffed animals and stuffed soccer balls around my house! Electrolux not only cleans them, but it also sanitizes them, which is huge! Electrolux is a wonderful match-up for me, and I am very proud to be sharing the message.”

CBS: Have you ever wanted to try for a girl? Maybe you have a special announcement for us?

BC: “I asked my husband about that a little while ago, and he was like, ‘No, no, no, we have two, we are very happy and blessed with the two healthy boys that we have.’ I get enough girls; my husband coaches collegiate women’s soccer at Santa Clara University, and I am on the field with thirty women everyday. They are like our adopted kids [laughs]. We take care of thirty women everyday, and that’s enough, believe me [laughs].”

CBS: Will you be attending the Olympics in London this summer? Who are you rooting for? What are your favorite summer Olympic sports?

BC: “I will be doing the commentary for NBC for the Olympics. Right now they are determining if we will do that from London or from New York City like we did for Beijing four years ago. I will somehow be involved in the Olympic Games this late summer, whether it’s there in London or not, I am not sure yet.

In regard to the team I am rooting for, come on! Are you kidding me?! [laughs] As a fan, I am rooting for the U.S., of course. As a professional in broadcasting, I am just hoping for a really good Olympics. Last summer for the World Cup, every single game was competitive. Every game had an impact on who finished in the groups and who made it to the knockout round. I am looking for a great tournament with a lot of skill and athleticism. I think the key match-ups will be anyone that plays Japan, because right now they are playing the best soccer that anyone’s seen in the world. It is a call to action for the U.S. women’s national team.

In regard to my favorite summer Olympic sports, soccer has to be my favorite summer Olympic sport, but I really love them all! I have been to three summer Olympic Games myself, and I think the spirit of the Olympics is so captivating. I remember how I felt when I watched the Olympics as a young girl… just thinking about how amazing it was to wave your flag, sing the national anthem, and the kind of spirit that goes along with the ideals of Olympism.

I have been an Olympic Ambassador for the last 8 years, and I love sharing the message with each and every Olympian going to the Olympics that there is a great responsibility not only on your respective playing field that goes along with representing your country. You have to do that with great pride, great respect, and great honor. No sport to me is more important than the other. I love watching them all—whether it is rhythmic gymnastics, swimming, track and field, they are all special and unique. These are the best athletes participating at the most elite level, so it is quite fascinating.”

CBS: What’s up next for you?

BC: “I am going to be kicking some soccer balls with the kids here at Chelsea Piers with Kelly Ripa. We are going to be kicking and cleaning and showing moms and dads out there how they can take care of their kids’ uniforms so they can look the best out on the field and play the best.

Just to remind all your viewers out there, for more information they can go to Facebook.com/Electrolux. Share your ‘Proud Parent Moment,’ thank you!”

Kristi Yamaguchi Hosts Story Reading With Q&A Tonight

06de20Claire20Deliman20for20M20Magazine201 Kristi Yamaguchi Hosts Story Reading With Q&A Tonight

Mom-of-two Kristi Yamaguchi is an Olympic ice skating champion, the first woman to win Dancing with the Stars, and now she’s taking on children’s literature. In the follow up from her first inspirational tale, Dream Big Little Pig!, Kristi releases It’s A Big World, Little Pig in hopes to encourage a natural bedtime routine and big imaginations.

Kristi opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about partnering with Tom’s of Maine for a live story reading and Q&A on Facebook tonight (March 14). In addition, there’s a chance to win Silly Strawberry samples and copies of her book. Kristi talks about her gorgeous girls Keara, 8, and Emma, 6, the importance of reading and her inspiration behind her sweet book.

CBS: Tell us about the Tom’s of Maine Silly Strawberry Story Hour on Facebook for a reading of your new children’s book It’s A Big World, Little Pig.

KY: “I was excited when Tom’s of Maine approached me to host a live story hour. I thought it was a great way to encourage a natural bedtime routine and to give parents and kids a chance to come together and wind down over a new book.

I hope many families will join us tonight. I’ll read my new book about the dreams of a little pig named Poppy and then you (or your kids!) can ask me questions. It should be fun to share a natural bedtime routine together. Plus, during the story hour, Tom’s of Maine will share a special way families can get a sample of their natural children’s toothpaste Silly Strawberry and copies of my book while supplies last.”

CBS: How can we tune in?

KY: “Just head to the Tom’s of Maine Facebook page under the Story Hour tab. You’ll see the video player all set up, simply click to join us.”

CBS: Tell us all about your new book. What inspired you to write the book?

KY: “My kids inspired me to write books. I love the time we spend reading together at night. It’s A Big World, Little Pig is a about Poppy, who is nervous to go to Paris for an international skating competition. While she is there, she discovers that her competitors, although seemingly different on the surface, are all the same at heart and a smile goes a long way.

I did draw upon some of my own experiences for this book. For instance, when I went to my first international competition, I had similar feelings of anxiety about meeting so many skaters from around the world. I quickly learned that we had so many similarities.”

CBS: Do you love to read?

KY: “I do love reading. I spent a lot of time as a child reading and it’s a joy that has stayed with me my whole life.”

CBS: How are your daughters Keara, 8, and Emma, 6, doing? What are they into? What are some of their favorite books?

KY: “The girls are at such a fun, active stage right now. They love helping me on my books. In fact, Keara actually came up with the name for the main character, Poppy the pig. Emma now says Poppy is her best friend. Kids in general have such great imaginations. It’s fun for me to hear their ideas and how they think a story should go. As for books, I think they’d probably say mommy’s books!”

CBS: Are you getting excited about the summer Olympics in London? Will you and your family be attending?

KY: “I always look forward to the Olympic Games. To this day, winning the gold medal is one of my greatest honors but I also have a lot of wonderful memories from the journey to get there. My husband and I both come from a sports background so we find it exciting to watch fellow athletes reaching for their dreams – and enjoy sharing that with our girls. We’ll be cheering on Team USA from home.”

CBS: What are your summer plans this year?

KY: “I’m looking forward to a vacation in Hawaii with the family and working on projects with my Always Dream Foundation, which supports children’s literacy. In fact, Tom’s of Maine is making a donation to it as part of this story hour event.”

CBS: What’s up next for you?

KY: “Promoting It’s a Big World, Little Pig and hopefully the launch of my clothing line.”

Tom’s of Maine Silly Strawberry is the first and only natural children’s toothpaste approved by the American Dental Assocation. While most mainstream brands contain saccharin, Silly Strawberry has no artificial dyes or sweeteners for those precious baby teeth. Plus, Tom’s of Maine donates 10% of profits back to the community.

Summer Sanders: From Gold Medals To Motherhood

d571summer sanders Summer Sanders: From Gold Medals To Motherhood

At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Summer Sanders emerged as the most decorated U.S. swimmer, winning four medals – two gold, a silver medal, and a bronze. Since her retirement, Summer has shown no signs of slowing down with various television appearances, a prenatal workout DVD, and her upcoming role as Yahoo!Sports correspondent at the London Olympic Games.

The busy mom-of-two opens up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her children Skye, 5, and Spider, 4, her postpartum weight loss secrets, and her experiences from an Olympic champion to a full-time mom.

CBS: You’re a retired gold medal Olympian, congratulations on your accomplishments. Was it hard to retire your swim trunks?

SS: “No, it was not. I felt just lucky that the time came without any drama. For some people it’s really hard to leave your sport, but I left with still so much love for swimming. My passion for competing wasn’t the same, so it was just time to move on.”

CBS: Will you be in London this summer? Who are you rooting for? What Olympic summer sports are your favorite?

SS: “Yes, I will be in London and because I’ll be there as a journalist for Yahoo, it will be hard to root for anyone. But I obviously love swimming and I want the U.S. to do really well and win every relay. I also love the beach volleyball venue and environment; it’s always a party. And the Athletics finals are simply amazing. It’s amazing how you can get 100 thousand people to be silent for the start of a race. To experience that is surreal.”

CBS: Being retired before the age of 40, what are you biggest goals for the next half of your life?

SS: “It’s actually the 20th anniverary of the medal I won at 19 in Barcelona, so I’ve now been retired for as long as I was swimming.

My life is the chaos of motherhood and my work, and I feel extremely lucky that I get to do both of them. I feel each role makes me better at the other. I’m sure my kids will argue, but I have an amazing support system that allows me to do a bunch of things in my life.”

CBS: Tell us about your two kids, Skye and Spider. What are their ages? What are they into?

SS: “Skye is 5, and going on 22 this April. Spider just turned 4. Spider is the most curious kid, with 20 questions for everything. He’s into superheros, skiing, soccer, and doing crazy twirling acts on the trampoline. He’s also just discovered the joy of reading.

My daughter is in kindergarten, and apparently her favorite game is chase the boys. She loves gymnastics and running. She’s already completed a 5K and has dreams, as she tells me, of competing in a 20k. She’s a very sweet and caring older sister. She’s also learning Spanish.”

CBS: How did you come up with the name Spider? Have you taken a lot of criticism for naming your son Spider?

SS: “With a name like Summer, I think it was somewhat expected that my children would end up with unique names. Spider’s full name is actually Charles Robert Spider Schlopy. Charles after my paternal grandfather, Robert after my dad, and Spider from the legendary ski racer Spider Sabich. Truthfully we didn’t have the guts to give him Spider as his first name, but if any kid ever fit his first name, this one fits his. My dad, who was responsible for naming me Summer, actually calls him Charlie because he loves that he’s named after his father.”

CBS: What are some of your favorite mommy moments or memories?

SS: “Obviously, moment No. 1 was when I got to meet them the very first time. It’s shocking how quickly instinct sets in. Then there are all their firsts: first smiles, first giggles, the first time your husband gets poop in his eye while changing a diaper.

Right now, my favorite moments are when they first get off the school bus and run to me as if they haven’t seen me for a week. I live for that moment in my afternoons. And also, because I love sports, I really love stepping back and watching them test and push themselves and learning about the things they can do when they put their minds to something. I find a lot of joy in being a spectator.”

CBS: Do you feel your Olympic training prepared you well for motherhood?

SS: “Not really. The dedidcation and time commitment, even the passion, yes those things carry over into parenthood. But you have no control in parenthood. In the pool, I could control my circumstances, my training, my output to achieve the results I wanted. You can’t control this little human being who’s just as stubborn as you are.

There was a formula for success during my career: it was to goal + dedication and personal challenge + hard work = results. There’s no handbook or formula like that for parenting, but I love it.”

CBS: We hear you’ve done a prenatal DVD. Tell us all about it. Did you stay in good shape prenatal? Did you lose the weight quickly postnatal? If so, what are your top 5 best postnatal weight loss secrets?

SS: “I was surrounded by athletes and women who had trained their whole lives, yet didn’t feel prepared or educated for what they could do during pregnancy. I felt like people needed guidance once their bodies became more than just their own, and that a DVD could show these amazing women that you can still be your athletic self.

I did stay in relatively good shape during my pregnancies, but I made sure to gain the proper amount of weight when I was pregnant, and it did take some time to get off, especially those last 10 pounds.

My top 5 postnatal weight-loss secrets, really aren’t secret. They’re very common sense.

1. Eat right, especially if you’re breastfeeding. Be sure you’re snacking and eating small meals, but make sure you’re eating the right kinds of foods and not just everything you want.

2. Get moving. Push your kid in a stroller or strap them on your chest and walk, walk, walk. It’s best for your bodies recovery and it’ll be good bonding time with your baby.

3. Remember ‘you’ time, You’re not selfish if you take an hour for yourself. You’ll actually be a better wife and mother when you feel good. So work-in-the-cracks-of-your- day and make time for you.

4. Use nap time for yourself. This continues my work-in-the-cracks-of-your-day idea. Use those down times to prepares healthy snacks you can grab on the go, workout, or just to relax and de-stress. Stress will make you want to eat more and make getting that baby weight off even more challenging.

5. Keep it realistic. This is key! Don’t expect the weight or the energy to be instant. It took 9 months to put it on, and it’ll take almost that long to get if off and get you back to feeling like you. And that’s OK! The models, athletes and actresses that are back red carpet ready in two months have more help than most of us are able, so just work on it and stay focused on a healthy, active you and you’ll get there and help your family in the process.”

CBS: What’s up next for you?

SS: “Well, being that it’s an Olympic year, there’s lots in the pipe for me and I’m so excited. As I mentioned, I’ll be in London with Yahoo!Sports reporting. I will be kind of their ‘face of the Games’ I’ll cover swimming and then have the opportunity to do a little roaming reporting and tell some of the amazing lifestyle stories of these world class athletes and their families. I’m also talking my family to London, and cannot wait to share the Olympic experience with them.

I recently competed on Food Network’s Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off, and while I didn’t win, I learned a a lot about food preparation and had a great time competing for Right To Play.

I’m on the 2012 ESPNW Women’s Advisory Board and am one of three athletes selected to be on the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

I am also working with a few Olympic sponsors. Right now, as a member of Team Kellogg’s, I’m the mentor, friend and ‘mom’ figure in a great group of athletes, featuring the likes of Kerri Walsh and Jordyn Wieber, who are all sharing their experiences and fueling up to compete in London. I’m actually going to be on the Corn Flakes box as part of partnership, which roles out this month celebrating my Olympic achievement 20 years ago and looking at my life now. It’s going to be such a cool experience to share with my kids!

There’s lots of other stuff as well, which will be continually add to my website and Facebook page, so people can find updated info and see all my plans for Olympic coverage this summer.”
