Earl Scruggs, the banjo playing, singing and composing great whose twanging bluegrass themes for TV’s The Beverly Hillbillies and the Bonnie and Clyde movie achieved Top of the Chart status in the ’60s, died Wednesday of natural causes at a Nashville hospital, his son Gary Scruggs told CNN. He was 88.

“It’s not just bluegrass, it’s American music,” bluegrass fan-turned-country star Dierks Bentley told the Associated Press about Scruggs’s output. “There’s 17- or 18-year-old kids turning on today’s country music and hearing that banjo and they have no idea where that came from. That sound has probably always been there for them and they don’t realize someone invented that three-finger roll style of playing. You hear it everywhere.”

Scruggs was born in North Carolina into a family in which everyone played an instrument, and, according to his biography, he could play the banjo by the time he was 4 and started to develop his distinctive (and lifelong) three-finger style at 10.

In 1945, he partnered with Lester Flatt, and their celebrated collaboration lasted nearly 25 years. (Flatt died in 1979, 10 years after the duo retired their act together.) In 1985, they were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

The chase music in the 1967 gangster movie Bonnie and Clyde, called “Foggy Bottom Breakdown,” featuring a long solo by Scruggs, was actually first written by Flatt and Scruggs in 1949.

The Beverly Hillbillies theme, “The Ballad of Jed Clampett” (“Come and listen to my story ’bout a man named Jed/A poor mountaineer barely kept his family fed …”) opened the show for every single episode of its 1962-71 run. During one story arc in the series, both Flatt and Scruggs vied for the available hand of Granny Clampett (Irene Ryan) – at least, so she thought.

Scruggs and the former Anne Louise Certain married in 1948. She died in 2006. Besides Gary, Scruggs is also survived by another son, Randy.

Donald Driver & Family: Dancing It Up In LA

Donald Driver is known as one of the toughest wide receivers in the NFL, however on Wednesday (March 28), he looked anything but tough. He was spotted spending some quality time with his family laughing and smiling at The Grove in Los Angeles, Calif. while on the set of Extra.

The Driver family – Donald’s wife Betina, and kids Cristian, Christina and Charity – have been spending time in Hollywood, Calif. supporting Donald in his journey to take the coveted Mirror Ball on Season 14 of Dancing With The Stars away from the other star hopefuls – Jaleel White and Maria Menounos to name a few.

The family has been coming to the studio on a regular basis to watch the Green Bay Packer star bust a move with his dance partner, Peta Murgatroyd. The kids have been showing an interest in their dad’s new job.

“As kids growing up, they always watched me play football… Now they see a different side of me as well,” the children’s author shared.

‘Oh, my dad can dance.’ And now they’re picking up me and Peta’s routines. They’re watching us at practice, and they’re copying it. That’s funny to see how they copy the routines back and forth. Now I just told Peta we should bring them in and let them do the routine, and we just watch them.’’

Selma Blair On Breastfeeding: "I Don’t Care Who I Offend"

Being out and about when Arthur is hungry isn’t about to stop Selma Blair from feeding him.

“The only time he cries is if he’s hungry,” the 39-year-old Anger Management actress tells PEOPLE. “We all have nipples. I don’t care who I offend; my baby wants to eat. If I can’t get a cover over me quick enough, so be it.”

Her devoted attention to Arthur’s nutrition is what led Selma to partner with the non-profit organization called get REAL for kids which is aimed at educating parents about food choices when it comes to feeding themselves and their children.

“Get REAL for kid is started by my very best childhood friend, Dr. Sue, so it made sense to get involved,” she says.

Nourishing myself correctly is very new to me, so I’m learning as well. It was important for me to be a real mom who loves her kid and needs to have more energy for herself and is trying to learn how to do this.”

Just like any first-time mom, Selma admits she’s “really obsessed” with her 8-month-old boy and considers herself lucky that she was able to spend most of his infancy at home with him.

“I never want to leave his side,” she says. “I’m one of those hovering mothers and I know it’s really important to have an independent child, so I’m trying to back off, but it’s hard. I love him so much, and he’s so funny and cute to me.”

According to his doting mama, Arthur has a very “sweet” and “outgoing” personality.

“He loves music, he loves to bang on the drums,” she shares. “He [also] doesn’t mind being teased, he’s an adrenaline junkie. He likes to be thrown up in the air.”
