As the sun rises up over the mountains of the L.A.-area home he shares with wife Vanessa, Nick Lachey walks upstairs, peeks into the nursery of his nearly 8-month-old son Camden John and begins singing.

“He’s an angel; he’s the happiest kid,” says Lachey, scooping up his boy and feeding him a bottle before walking out to get the paper with his dog Wookie in tow. “It’s our morning ‘dude time’ and the perfect way to start my day.”

It’s a new dawn indeed for the pop star-turned-family man. “Vanessa and I were at the point in our lives where we were 100 percent ready to become parents,” says Lachey, 39. “Every single thing in your life changes, and we welcomed that.”

Despite juggling diaper duty at home with a busy career – he’s hosting two NBC shows, releasing his first album in 13 years with his band 98 Degrees on May 7, kicking off a summer tour and promoting his album A Father’s Lullaby, in stores now – he says, “It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this calm.”

That is, until he packs up the family for almost three months of living on a tour bus shared with Nick’s brother Drew and his wife, Lea, and two children.

“Camden will be a rock and roll kid,” says Lachey, laughing, who sees himself and Vanessa, 32, as “pretty chill” first-time parents. “We’re not overly obsessive or controlling – I like to think we’re cool and hip.”

Nick Lachey Hasn’t Talked to Ex-Wife Jessica Simpson in Six Years

TV News

05/08/2013 at 11:45 AM EDT

It seems like decades ago that Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson were the first couple of reality TV – but on Tuesday’s Watch What Happens Live, host Andy Cohen couldn’t seem to forget!

When Lachey, 39, and the rest of guys of 98 Degrees visited Cohen’s talk show, the singer’s ex-wife and her family were hot topics.

“Wow. Is this the part where I can plead the Fifth? It’s been years [since I've talked to Jessica]. Years. Honestly, probably six years,” Lachey said. “It was like another lifetime ago.”

Cohen asked if Lachey ever reminisces by watches Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, the three-season reality series that followed the couple as they struggled to make their marriage work.

“I have not. As you can imagine, that’s not popular viewing in my house. We don’t sit around as a family and watch the old DVDs,” he said with a laugh. Lachey and Simpson, 32, ultimately divorced in 2005, after three of marriage.

In 2011, Lachey married Vanessa Minnillo, and the couple welcomed son Camden John in September of 2012.

During “Plead the Fifth,” a question-and-answer game Cohen plays with celebrity guests, who can stay silent rather than answer an uncomfortable question, the subject of Simpson’s father, Joe, came up.

Cohen asked, “What is the best thing about no longer having Joe Simpson as a father-in-law?”

Nick’s brother, Drew, quickly interjected, “Everything!”

“What is the best thing about not having Joe Simpson as a father-in-law … I don’t have to play grab a–– under the table on Easter Sunday,” Nick said with a laugh.

“I am blushing!” Cohen remarked.

“Our publicist is freaking out right now,” Drew, 36, said.

“That’s very funny,” Cohen said.

“It may not be tomorrow, but it is tonight,” Nick said.

Vanessa Williams Shares Mother’s Day Plans and Her Advice for Duchess Kate

05/06/2013 at 02:15 PM EDT

Vanessa Williams already knows what she’s getting for Mother’s Day this year: a round of applause and, most likely, a standing ovation.

The mom-of-four (Melanie, 25, Jillian, 23, Devin, 20, and Sasha, 13) is marking the holiday from her spot on stage in Broadway’s The Trip to Bountiful. “I have a 3 o’clock matinee. No rest for the weary,” Williams, 50, tells PEOPLE, adding, “Maybe my kids will surprise me with a dinner afterward.”

Beyond the theater, she’s also taking time to honor her late grandmothers, who both died after struggling with heart disease. (Her maternal grandmother died at 64 after having a massive heart attack, and her paternal grandmother died at 28.) And that’s why she’s partnered with Bayer Aspirin on its Handbags & Hearts campaign in the hopes of helping women understand the signs and symptoms of a heart attack.

“I’m very, very aware of heart health,” she says. “I’m very mindful of my diet and exercise, and I think being a woman, you have to be.”

She adds: “I’m a mother of four, I just turned 50 this year, and I want to be around for a long time.”

For those who aren’t mothers quite yet – we’re looking at you Duchess of Cambridge – Williams has a few words of wisdom straight from her own heart.

“Motherhood is one of the greatest gifts and surprises in life,” she says. “You always have to be prepared for the unexpected. You have to be able to surrender to whatever situation it is and do the best you can at any moment.”

Of mom-to-be Kate, she adds: “I’m sure she’ll be a terrific mom.”

Nick Lachey: Camden Is The Happiest Baby On Earth

New dad Nick Lachey is loving every minute with his 7-month-old son Camden who has “just started crawling.” The crooner, 39, is debuting his new lullaby album, A Father’s Lullaby, as well as his latest CD with 98 Degrees, titled 2.0.

Nick opens up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about the joys of fatherhood, touring this summer with wife Vanessa Lachey and their sweet son, his hopes for another son and a daughter, and his plans to keep “evolving” in the music industry.

CBS: Tell us all about new lullaby album, A Father’s Lullaby. Tell us about the songs and what inspired you to do the album.

NL: “Well, I was definitely inspired to do the album because of the impending birth of my son, Camden.  All the emotions you feel in anticipation of this experience is perfect for writing music. I chose songs that were favorites of mine and then also wrote 6 originals for the record. The originals are so meaningful to me, truly inspired by my little man.”

CBS: Do you notice that Camden responds to your singing voice? Do you feel it’s a special way to bond with your baby, whether you have a beautiful voice like yours or not?

NL: “Camden definitely recognizes my voice when he hears it. I think it’s an incredible way to bond with your little one, whether you have a good singing voice or not!”

CBS: How is Camden doing?

NL: “Camden is great, he really is the happiest baby on Earth. He’s just started crawling, which is a lot of fun.”

CBS: Tell us about your new album with 98 Degrees, 2.0, and your upcoming North American tour. Is this your last hurrah as a rockstar? Are Camden and Vanessa coming on the road with you?

NL: “I’m very proud of the new 98 Degrees album. I think we did a good job of evolving with a changing music scene, but still staying true to our ‘sound.’

I hope this isn’t my last hurrah! I love to sing more than anything and hope I can keep doing it for as long as I enjoy it.

Vanessa and Camden will be out on the road with me this summer for sure. I can’t miss my little man growing up. I love touring and can’t wait to explore the country with the family.”

CBS: You are also set to host NBC’s The Sing Off premiering this holiday season. What’s it all about?

NL: “The Sing Off is an a capella singing competition show. A capella music has been a huge part of my career, so it’s exciting to be a part of a show that celebrates this style of music and discovers new talent.”

CBS: You recently said you’re moving home to Ohio in a few years. Do you plan to retire once you move home?

NL: “I’m way too young to retire! I do plan on spending as much time with my kids as possible though, so if that means trying to lighten the workload a little bit, then so be it. My family is definitely the priority at this point in my life.”

CBS: How has fatherhood changed you? Please share some of the greatest joys of fatherhood. Biggest challenges?

NL: “It has changed me for sure. It literally affects everything you do, every decision you make. Your priorities completely shift and your kids instantly become the most important thing in the world. I think it’s made me a more patient person as well.

My greatest joy is waking him up every day. Seeing that little boy look up and smile at me every morning is the perfect way to start my day. The biggest challenge is having enough time in the day to do everything I need to do.”

CBS: It seems like you’re thrilled to have a son. Are you also hoping to have a daughter one day? How many kids would you like?

NL: “I think it would be a lot of fun to have a daughter one day, but either way, fatherhood is great, regardless of the gender. In a perfect world, we’d have one more boy, then a girl.”
