Mark Wahlberg & Family: Park Playmates

Mark Wahlberg, his wife Rhea Durham, and their daughter Ella spent time at Coldwater Canyon Park after school last Friday (April 26).

The Pain & Gain actor shared his snack of chips with the 9-year-old. Later on the family were also seen stopping by a birthday party in Beverly Hills.

In a past interview Wahlberg said that his girls are tough.

He said, “They are very strong, smart, and independent. Having two daughters changed my perspective on a lot of things, and I definitely have a newfound respect for women. And I think I finally became a good and real man when I had a daughter. Women don’t get the credit they deserve.

“I was at my daughter’s ballet class and I was on the phone making a business call and watching her on the monitor, and I realized how hard it is to work and be there for your kids. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no job more important on the planet than being a mom.”

Iron Man 3 & Boston Marathon Bombing: PEOPLE’s Critic Weighs In About Violent Similarities

05/03/2013 at 12:55 PM EDT

A megalomaniacal terrorist unleashes a rash of bombings across the United States. Innocent people die. A nation reels in horror. No, these aren’t the latest headlines – they’re the set-up of the latest Iron Man movie, already igniting controversy.

For some viewers, that plotline about a terrorist known as The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) cuts too closely to the Boston Marathon bombing allegedly carried out by the Tsarnaev brothers earlier this month. It certainly caused a hush to fall over the crowd at the film’s glitzy Los Angeles premiere at the El Capitan Theatre last week.

The film’s stars addressed the issue at a press conference last week, with Don Cheadle (who plays Col. James Rhodes) stressing that the film was finished well before the bombings earlier this month, and that there is no political agenda.

“The job of this film is to entertain,” he said. “That’s what we’re hoping to do.”

Gwyneth Paltrow (who plays Pepper Potts) brought the controversy even closer to home, talking about the effect of cinematic violence on her own children.

“We do live in an unsafe world,” she said. “That’s the truth, and I’m dealing with this now with my 7-year-old. He’s sort of grappling with the fact that the world is unsafe and there are people who do harmful things. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with presenting that idea. We can’t lie to our children and pretend that the world is perfect.”

To my mind, we also can’t blame filmmakers when something they’ve created accidentally brushes up against a real-world act of violence. As long as we keep making movies with violent scenes, those kinds of unfortunate coincidences will keep happening.

Earlier this year, Gangster Squad debuted with one salient scene missing: a movie-theater shooting that struck some as being overly reminiscent of the tragedy in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater last July. That particular example, though, involved a scene that wasn’t entirely integral to telling the Gangster Squad story. To cut the bombing scene in Iron Man 3 would mean scrapping the film and starting over; it’s so central to the plot.

I should add that there’s absolutely no discussion of Iron Man 3 being edited or delayed because of negative associations with the Boston case. In fact, the film already has opened overseas, with a nearly $200 million haul to show for it.

Pain & Gain Also Violent

Besides, there’s also the larger point that there are plenty of instances of violence in films over which we bat nary an eyelash. Take this weekend’s box-office winner, Pain & Gain, which stars Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson as idiot body-builders who become surprisingly successful kidnappers.

Pain, which I actually liked for its ridiculous humor, is based on a real-life case in the mid-1990s, in which a Florida couple was brutally murdered. It seems disingenuous to cause a stink about IM3‘s entirely unintentional similarity to the Boston Marathon bombing when Pain & Gain exploits a real-life tragedy for entertainment.

And if a movie gives us a moment’s pause for its use of violence, that’s not an inherently bad thing.

As Paltrow put it, “It’s just part of a bigger conversation. I know that after my children saw [Iron Man 3], I had certain conversations with my son about it, and so I think it’s a good, contained place to have a conversation.”

Nobody is above the law, not even the rich and famous! Even though we mostly just think of their cushy life style, a surprising number of stars have done  time in the clink. And not just overnights from DUIs, either. We’re talking long stretches and serious sentences. Hard time, y’all!

To be honest, we’re not sure if that makes us like them more or less. Depends what they were in for, we guess…The rap sheet runs from drug smuggling to weapons possession, wreck-less driving to assault, and pretty much every conceivable change in between. Some celebs got busted long before you knew their names, while others had to endure a prison sentence under intense media glare. We can picture some folks like Mark Wahlberg and Lil’ Kim holding their own pretty well, but Tim Allen and Lindsay Lohan in prison? We just can’t see it!

Matt Damon: Why I Renewed My Vows

04/26/2013 at 11:05 PM EDT

Matt Damon‘s wife now has his entire family and all of his friends on her side if there’s ever an argument over who gets the side of the bed closest to the bathroom.

“It’s nice to say your vows in front of family,” Damon told the crowd gathered Thursday at Harvard University, where he was honored for his work in the arts with 2013 Harvard Arts Medal presented by actor John Lithgow.

“That’s the point of taking the vows. These are people who will hold you to them. One of my vows was I gave her the side of the bed closer to the bathroom. And if I don’t stick to that, I’m gonna hear about that from my mom, brother and father.”

On April 13, Damon and wife Luciana renewed their wedding vows in front of 50 family and friends on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, though during Thursday night’s question-and-answer session, he explained why the couple had originally married at city hall.

“We were gonna get married over Christmas [in 2005], and then somebody got wind of it, and my publicist told me these people are are all going to go down to Miami where we lived at the time,” he said. “We thought our whole holiday break was going get ruined with people hanging around, with helicopters and all that stuff. So we literally ran to the city on [on Dec. 9, 2005,] and just tied the knot really quickly, just to kind of nip that whole thing in the bud.”

A hectic family life raising their four daughters delayed the renewal of vows that Damon said the couple always really wanted to do.

The Boston native also said that being back in his hometown after the bombings that shook the city’s iconic Boston Marathon was emotional, and added that fellow Bostonian Mark Wahlberg’s quote about the bombings articulated just how many people feel.

“Particularly right now, it’s good to be back in Boston,” Damon said. “I went to school where the youngest bomber went to school, and was just talking about all the happy memories I had there. And my nephew goes to school there now. I think we’re all still in shock. I certainly am still in shock, and I’m trying to figure out what this all means and how it could happen.”
